trust me, don't freelance anywhere horse archers are. if you want, you can freelance to pick up some levels and pump up your trade skills or combat skills or whatever you want to do first - i suggest going to western europe, around UK/France to do this because then you don't have to deal with horse archers which will RUIN your fun as a freelancer. 1257 really simplifies this because mercenary wages are fucking ridiculous. like in all m&b games, your first goal is to set up in an economy. Hopefully you don't miss this because it's been a while. And just remove the stupid moral hit for units that fight units of the same culture, it's a civil war anyway so it doesn't belong into the mod. That way you get less useless branches since everyone share the same troop tree, and the game only has a few special trees here and there. Then put special units or branches in a few regions, like better Ashigaru for Owari, monks for Ikko Ikki, unique cav or better cav for Takeda regions, and so on. Have generic japanese units : Peasants evolving into Ashigaru pikes, guns and bows, Samurai evolving into melee/archer/cav/guns elites and bodyguards. They should use a mix of Shogun 2 Total War and Silverstag. Regarding the bloat, personally I feel like it's mainly due to the bad decision of separating the units by clans, wich makes no fucking sense outside maybe of native's moral mechanic that makes units lose moral when fighting units of the same culture (wich makes no fucking sense either).
